2015-2016 Board of Directors

The Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG) is very pleased to announce the 2015-2016 Board of Directors as elected by OAAG membership on November 18, 2015 at the Annual General Meeting.

The Board of Directors is responsible for establishing policies that govern the Association, overseeing that these policies are followed, and delegating responsibilities to the Executive Director and Committees. The Board maintains a moral and ethical responsibility to the profession and to the Association.

The Board of Directors is currently composed of ten voting members, who are elected from the general membership. Board members are elected for a three-year term and may serve for a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Short Biographies

VIRGINIA EICHHORN, PRESIDENT & BOARD MEMBER

Virginia Eichhorn is the Director & Chief Curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, Billy Bishop and Owen Sound Marine and Rail museums. She has worked in the visual arts field for over 25 years. As an independent curator she has presented exhibitions at numerous prestigious venues including the XII Biennale of Art at Villa Nova Cerveira in Portugal. She has worked with artists from across Canada and abroad, including Carl Beam, Judy Chicago, Vessna Perunovich, Jane Ash Poitras and Peter Von Tiesenhausen, developing exhibitions for high profile Canadian galleries and museums. In 2009, she won the Ontario Crafts Council Award for Curatorial Excellence. She has written numerous catalogue essays and has contributed articles to Canadian magazines including Artichoke, Canadian Art, Border Crossings, ESPACE Sculpture and international magazines such as Ceramics Monthly.  She is a member of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, the International Association of Art Museum Curators, the Canadian Art Museum Directors’ Organization and the Association of Art Museum Curators. She previously served as Vice President and Treasurer of the OAAG Board of Directors. She is a graduate of the Art History program at Queen’s University and continued her studies at the University of Toronto. 

SHIRLEY MADILL, VICE-PRESIDENT & BOARD MEMBER

Shirley Madill is the Executive Director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. She is a graduate from the University of Manitoba whose post-graduate studies focused on International and Cultural History as well as Art History. Shirley has held many positions in the public art gallery sector throughout her career, including Curator of Contemporary Art and Photography at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Chief Curator/Director of Programming and later Vice-President/Chief Operating Officer at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, CEO at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and Director at the Rodman Hall Art Centre/Brock University. Shirley is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Council of Museums, Vice-President of Canadian Association of Museum Directors Organization and former member of the Board of Directors of Hamilton Entertainment and Convention Facilities Inc. Her publication record is extensive and she has also served on numerous Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council juries, and presented papers on photography, performance art, women’s art issues and First Nations art across Canada and the United States.

MELANIE TOWNSEND, TREASURER & BOARD MEMBER

Melanie Townsend is the Head of Exhibitions and Collections at Museum London. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Windsor, and is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where she serves as Adjunct Professor in the department of Visual Arts. Most recently, she produced Incognito, a retrospective exhibition and publication on the work of Canadian performance artist Colette Urban. She has served on the board of the Ontario Association of Art Gallery since 2010.

MATTHEW HYLAND, SECRETARY & BOARD MEMBER

Matthew Hyland is Director of Oakville Galleries, where he is currently working on a series of exhibitions that examine key themes in contemporary feminist art practices. Prior to joining the staff at the Galleries in 2006, Matthew held positions at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre and the City of Toronto. He was nominated for the 2009 Lorenzo Bonaldi Art Prize, an international award for curators under 30.

OLINDA CASIMIRO, PAST PRESIDENT & BOARD MEMBER

Olinda Casimiro is the Director of Administration and Finance of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. She is an innovative and strategic-thinking program leader with specialized expertise in operational planning and business development and over 15 years of experience providing strategic direction for The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. In her role, she combines big-picture thinking with insightful analytical skills to develop effective programs and plans towards achieving organizational goals. Olinda has contributed extensively to the life of the community through her professional and volunteer work, including with the Friends of the Oshawa Public Library, Doors Open Oshawa, Canadian Federation of University Women, Oshawa, and the Literacy Council of Durham Region. Olinda is a graduate of Carleton University and her other professional qualifications include Certificates in Human Resource Management from UOIT, Queens University, and Durham College

JAN ALLEN, BOARD MEMBER

Jan Allen is an award-winning curator, a writer and an assistant professor in the Department of Art History and Art Conservation and in the Cultural Studies Program at Queen's University, Kingston. As the long-standing Chief Curator/Curator of Contemporary Art at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, she developed numerous exhibitions, publications and programs since 1992. She became Acting Director in 2012. Her research has focused on art policy in Canada, electronic media, and socially and politically engaged contemporary art practices. Allen serves on the Advisory Committee of the School of Image Arts, Ryerson University, and the Arts Advisory Committee of the City of Kingston. She joined the Board of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries in 2012.

HEATHER FULLERTON, BOARD MEMBER

Heather Fullerton is the Executive Director of the Georgina Arts Centre & Gallery (GAC) in Sutton, Ontario.  She has worked in the visual arts field for over 30 years and has been the Executive Director at the GAC since March 2004.  She partners and volunteers with various local organizations to unite the arts with her community at a grass roots level.  Currently, she is on two Committees for the Town of Georgina (Cultural Planning & Sutton Community Hub Site), is a Board Member of the York Region Arts Council, a Volunteer Community Producer for Rogers TV, and has served on the board of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries since 2012.  Heather was Georgina’s 2005 Citizen of the Year and is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal presented to her for her work in her community.

FRANCINE PÉRINET, BOARD MEMBER

Francine Périnet is the Principal of Francine Perinet Projects. Francine was the Director of The Varley Art Gallery of Markham from 2009-2013. Francine studied History of Art at Université de Montréal and at Concordia University in Montréal. In 1980, she founded Artexte (a research centre in contemporary art) with Angela Grauerholz and Anne Ramsden and is now an Honorary Board member. She has worked at PARACHUTE magazine; directed Optica, a centre dedicated to contemporary in Montréal in 1982; was the National Spokesperson and President of the Association of the National Not for Profit Artist-Run Centres between 1981 and 1983; worked at The Canada Council for the Arts as Assistant Head and Programme Officer in the Visual Arts Section from 1983 to 1988. She directed the Department of Visual Arts from 1988 to 1992 and taught at the University of Ottawa for many years. From 1992 to 2008, she was the Director of Oakville Galleries. Her board and committee experiences include serving on the Board of Directors of FUSE magazine, the Acquisitions Committee and the Contemporary Consultative Committee at The Art Gallery of Ontario from 1993 to 2006, and the Board of Directors of C magazine since 2004 and co-vice-president from 2006 to 2009. Francine has worked in many other capacities as a specialist in the contemporary visual arts.

CAROL PODEDWORNY, BOARD MEMBER

Carol Podedworny is the Director and Chief Curator of the McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in McMaster University’s School of the Arts. Carol holds Masters in Museum Studies (University of Toronto) and Art History (York University). She has worked in the Canadian arts community since 1982 and is a member of the Canadian Art Museum Directors’ Organization and the University/College Art Gallery Association of Canada. In the past 30 years, Carol has worked for a variety of Canadian cultural institutions as staff and independent curator. She has produced over 70 exhibitions and contributed over 50 essays to journals, books and exhibition catalogues including contributing to the St. James Guide to Native North American Art (St. James Press), Contemporary Canadian Artists (Gale Canada), and the publication associated with In the Shadow of the Sun, the inaugural exhibitions in the Indian & Inuit Galleries at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Carol has taught at York University, University of Waterloo, and Queen’s University. Her research interests include curatorial and museological practice, contemporary Canadian art, and post-contact First Nations art.

KAREN TAIT-PEACOCK, BOARD MEMBER

Karen Tait-Peacock is Director of the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Throughout her 17 years of NGO and entrepreneurship experiences, she’s fine-tuned the art of fundraising, launching capital campaigns and directing communications and marketing efforts for the greater good. Karen’s work focuses around helping individuals and the communities they lived in. While completing her Masters at Laurentian University, Karen co-founded the Walden Youth for Youth Centre. Connecting kids with their local community, the centre continues to thrive under the stewardship of the City of Greater Sudbury. Brands that Karen has guided through her fundraising, marketing and communications abilities include Easter Seals, Scott Tournament of Hearts, Ontario March of Dimes, Huntington University, Active Healthy Kids Canada and Frontier College. Karen is Past Chair of Walden Community Action Network and is an active member of the Canadian Association of Museum Directors’ Organization, the Canadian Museum Association, and the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce. Born in Toronto, but raised in Sudbury, Karen returned to her roots and once again calls Sudbury home.
